Almas 5-306
Looking Back
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I must say I enjoyed meeting all of you at Parent-teacher Conferences, and I look forward to our continued cooperation in ensuring your child’s success.
This November…
- The students explored the Non-fiction portion of the class library. We practiced several strategies that helped them get into these books. They read about various topics in social studies, science, sports, etc.
- We have moved out of writing DBQ essays, now that the Social Studies State Exam is over (Hooray!!!), and we are currently working on our Personal Essays. For this essay, the students make a claim about something they have personal experience with and can prove.
- In math, we have moved out of our Number Sense unit and into working with decimals.
- In 5-306 the students began examining rocks. We conducted an experiment in which we had to identify and classify different rocks into different categories.
Special Recognition
The Awards Assembly will be held this Friday, December 5. Ten students from 5-306 will be receiving an award from me. The categories are Honor Roll, Citizenship, and Special Recognition.
Keep in mind…
*Please continue to check your child’s Homework Notebook each night and
be on the look-out for incoming Missing Homework Slips over the weekends.
*Continue to remind your child to work on book reports-they need to hand in 25 before the end of the year.
Looking forward
This December…
- Reading: With the ELA Exam fast approaching (January 13/14) we will be looking very closely at sample exams for our Reading Workshop period. The students will apply a variety of test-taking strategies. Students should still be reading a book for 45 minutes each night.

- Social Studies: We will begin studying Westward Expansion of the United States.
- Science: We will continue our study of rocks and landforms (how they form and change).
Upcoming Exam: This Friday December 5th we will be having Math Exam 5 (decimals)
