Welcome Parents and Students,
I am very excited to have this new and exciting resource for you to visit. Each month I will be updating this website with newsletters, testing information, important dates, and student work. You will be able to email me, post messages, and leave feedback and questions.
This month in literacy we will be studying all the aspects of non-fiction texts. We will be looking at a variety of texts and expading our knowledge base of different topics a well as learning how to navigate our ways through non-fiction texts.
In writing, students will begin writing personal essay. After competing a unit on personal narrative we will now explore personal essay. Students will learn the difference between personal narrative and personal essay. Students will explore personal essay, gather notebook entries, choose a seed idea, explore that seed idea, draft, edit, and finally publish. They will go through all aspects of the writing process. Students will also use published writing to gather ideas and view different ways to express themselves in their writing. At the end of the process there will be a publishing party to celebrate the hard work of the students.
This month in math, students will be continuing their work in multiplication and division. It is imperative that you are practicing your multiplication tables each night. Please go over the times tables nightly it will help immensely! We will also be working on word problems and working on understanding when to use certain operations. Students will look for key words, analyze the question, choose an operation, and check to make sure their answer makes sense. It is so important to ask yourself if the answer makes sense.
In Social Studies, we are looking at exploration and the formation of Manhattan. We will first look at how the Dutch settled and created New Amsterdam. Students will look at the effect the Dutch had on the Native Americans and the obstacles they encountered when moving to a new land.
In Science, we will continue our learning, in cooperation with Ms. Kim, on living things. We will be looking at food chains, fooed webs, ecosystems, etc. Students will be creating their own webs, chans, and looking at a variety of life cycles.
As always, I encourage an open line of communication with parents. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Within the next week or so we will be having a Publishing Party to celebrate our personal narratives. I am also planning a trip to the Museum mof Natural History to view Native Americans in New York State.
We are running short of a few supplies such as tissues, Fantastic, paper towels, pencils…if anyone would like to donate it would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at Parent/Teacher Conferences. I hope everyone is well and have a Happy Thanksgiving! I find myself very thankful for having such an inspiring class this year!
